On June 4, NEO Battery Materials announced the launch of a high-power and energy battery platform designed for FPV strike drones and loitering munitions, targeting increased endurance and reduced reliance on Chinese supply chains.
The new pouch-cell batteries are engineered to deliver higher performance at the same size and dimensions as existing market alternatives. The platform is also aligned with U.S. National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) requirements, supporting procurement across U.S. and allied defence programmes.
Performance gains for FPV strike missions
NEO’s 6.5 Ah battery demonstrated an 82% increase in energy density compared to a commercial Chinese equivalent, improving from 129 Wh/kg to 235 Wh/kg. In a simulated 250 km/h strike scenario, this translated into a 102.9% increase in flight range, extending from 24.4 km to 49.5 km under the same current conditions.
The higher-capacity 11.5 Ah variant is designed to improve power delivery and thermal performance. In testing, it retained 78.8% capacity under a 10C discharge profile, compared to 48% for a benchmark silicon-based battery, indicating greater stability in high-intensity mission environments.
Addressing supply chain and deployment requirements
The platform is positioned as one of the first non-Chinese battery alternatives for FPV strike drones, addressing supply constraints in the defence sector. Governments in Ukraine, the United States, South Korea, and Japan are exploring integration as part of efforts to diversify sourcing and strengthen supply chain resilience.
NEO has prioritised cost-competitive production to support large-scale deployment of attritable systems. This aligns with increasing demand for low-cost drones capable of delivering operational impact against higher-value targets.
The company is also targeting national stockpiling initiatives, as countries expand FPV drone inventories to support readiness and deterrence strategies.
Dual-use applications and certification pathway
Beyond defence, the batteries are designed for use in commercial drone operations, including precision agriculture, inspection, and industrial logistics. Both variants are expected to support approximately 1,000 charge cycles, enabling sustained use across dual-use markets.
The products are currently undergoing certification processes, including UN 38.3 and KC standards, to support safe transport and international deployment.
Implications for the loitering munitions ecosystem
The launch reflects a broader shift in the loitering munitions market toward scalable, cost-effective, and supply chain-secure components. As FPV drone usage expands, battery performance is becoming a key factor in extending range, endurance, and operational flexibility.
By combining improved energy density with NDAA compliance, NEO’s platform is positioned to support both immediate operational needs and longer-term efforts to build resilient, non-Chinese drone supply chains.
